Liverpool’s early form has left a lot to be desired but patience is needed

Liverpool are not playing well right now. It’s plain to see. Our only good performance this season was in the 3-0 hammering of Spurs when we played the diamond, and since then we seem to be struggling to adapt to the underwhelming 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 formations that Rodgers is trying to bring to the team in the absence of Sturridge.

While our recent performances have not been acceptable at all, many people seem to be jumping to conclusions. I’ve seen people suggest that we’re a one man team in two separate cases: first people said we relied too much on Daniel Sturridge, then when he was injured and Sterling was rested against Villa, people claimed we relied too much on Raheem.

I went to the pub to watch the Ludogorets game on Tuesday and heard a woman screaming at Balotelli at the top of her lungs: “How much did we pay for you?! We could have bought THREE players with the money we paid for you!” Never mind the fact that Balotelli’s price tag is actually incredibly cheap for a player of his talent, and I doubt that any of these three £5.3m strikers would have been a better choice to start a Champions League game ahead of Balotelli. The lady seemed to have forgotten her accusations when Mario opened the scoring anyway.

I find it incredible that fans are willing to write off new players so quickly. With regulars like Sturridge, Allen and Skrtel missing through injury, our new signings have been forced to bed in earlier than they’d like. Not only do they have to get used to the way Rodgers likes to play football, but they also have to gel with their new team mates.

That’s difficult to do anyway, but it’s even worse when you remember that almost none of our new signings have had a proper pre-season. Even our regulars have had a short pre-season due to the World Cup; then you have Lovren, unable to join us on our pre-season tour in USA due to visa issues, Markovic who was signed right as the tour ended, Balotelli hadn’t kicked a ball before joining us two weeks into the season due to injury and Lallana picked up an injury that ruled him out for the rest of pre-season and the beginning of the league season.

I’ve seen people immediately decide that Lallana is terrible based on his 105 minutes of football he’s played for us, which is ridiculous. For all of these players, it’s as much about regaining match fitness as it is getting to know your team mates and adapting to new formations and philosophies that Rodgers would like them to learn.

All of these things take time. Once these players find their match sharpness again and develop a sense of chemistry together on the pitch, they’ll be able to perform at the standard we expect of them. Unfortunately, we’ll just have to wait a while until they do.

So let’s all calm down, and keep faith. And hope Brendan goes back to playing that diamond already.
