Gerrard has struggled since the start of the new season but will probably get a contract extension before January

That one moment in Liverpool Football Club’s history that so many fans dread looks like it may be approaching, as club captain and living legend Steven Gerrard has admitted he may have to leave the club at the end of the current season if he isn’t offered an extension to his current contract.

Speaking in a very frank interview with the Telegraph yesterday, Gerrard said “I’m only contracted until May. As it stands, I’m here until the end of the season and want to make the most of it.

“I won’t be retiring this summer.  I will play beyond this season.

“We will have to wait and see if that’s at Liverpool or somewhere else. That’s Liverpool’s decision. If they don’t come then I will see what’s out there.”

After a poor start to his latest season at Liverpool, Gerrard has taken some criticism but remains an important part of the squad Brendan Rodgers has built, both on and off the field.

Gerrard continued, “When Luis Suárez left I knew it would be like that.

“When you come close (to the title) it is important you keep your main players. It’s not just about those coming in, it’s about what got you there.

“You need to keep that together and add to it. When you are taking big chunks of it away and adding five or six into it, it’s not going to happen overnight.

“I would love a (Cesc) Fabregas or (Diego) Costa here, but I have to understand how the owners want to do it and accept I am a Liverpool player, not a Chelsea or Manchester City player.”

With such a young, inexperienced squad, the pressure will be on Brendan Rodgers and the club owners to stretch the clubs coffers a little bit more to bring in some top quality, experienced players in January but many will feel that the most important signing the club will make will be getting the captain to extend his contract.

How do you feel about Gerrard’s words; do Liverpool need to tie him down straight away, or should the club wait to see how the season progresses?

Stevie G form integral part of past-current and future Liverpool FC. Legends usually strive to achieve the unattainable in extra-ordinarily manner and fashion. Energizing mementos, resuscitating form of last season & filling the void between mediocre and deliverable requires wisdom, commitment, perseverance, vision and experience. Thus, all efforts must employed to retain “Captain fantastic”…success is not an event but a process….Rodger.

He was a captain fantastic, not any more. His legs have gone, if the club dont offer another contract then its bye bye Stevie, nothing personal but the future is what matters.
