Margaret Aspinall, chair of The Hillsborough Family Support Group (HFSG), joined LFC legends Robbie Fowler and Jan Molby on a visit to one of Liverpool FC Foundation’s community sports sessions that has benefitted from the celebration of the 96 charity match held earlier this year.
The group attended Anfield Sports and Community Centre alongside representatives from Liverpool FC Foundation to see first-hand where some of the proceeds raised from the match will be used.
More than 45,000 people attended the Celebration of the 96 charity match, which was held at Anfield on Easter Monday (April 21st) to celebrate the lives of the 96 Liverpool fans who lost their lives at Hillsborough.
At the request of the HFSG, all the proceeds raised from the event were divided equally between HFSG and Liverpool FC Foundation.
The sell-out event, which was planned by HFSG with support from Liverpool FC, featured a match between local Liverpool legends and international Liverpool legends at Anfield.
Kenny Dalglish, manager of the local legends team and Jan Molby who both played an instrumental role in co-ordinating the teams, will personally thank all of the fans during half-time at the Club’s Capital One Cup fixture against Swansea City.
Some of the legends involved in the charity match, which was supported by the Club’s official credit card partner MBNA, included Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler, Jamie Redknapp, John Barnes, Dietmar Hamann, Luis Garcia and Gerrard Houllier– who managed the international legends team.
A Liverpool FC Foundation football session on the pitch prior to kick-off with local youngsters included the first team, academy and ladies players. Celebrities including, Clare Balding and Russell Howard also took part in a half time penalty shoot-out in front of the kop against the Club’s official mascot, Mighty Red.
Margaret Aspinall, Chair of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, said: “On behalf of the entire group I would like to thank everyone who supported, attended or watched the Celebration of the 96 event, particularly the former players who gave up their time so generously to make the event happen. It was such a glorious day which brought people of all ages together at Anfield for a celebration in honour of the 96. The event was testament to our fantastic fans and our great city who have supported us for the past 25 years and continue to do so.
“Our decision to share the proceeds with LFC’s Foundation ensured that vital funds were also put back into the local community to support future generations, which is very important to us.”
Mark Haig, Head of Operations at Liverpool FC Foundation, added: “I would like to thank HSFG for generously sharing the proceeds raised from the charity match with the Foundation.
“The donation will help us continue to inspire positive change and build better futures for thousands of young people and adults in local communities both at home and abroad.”
