Alves would be a significant upgrade on Johnson and would aid Manquillo

As manager Brendan Rodgers continues to try and bolster his Liverpool defence, the name that had cropped up several times since the summer is Dani Alves, a player widely regarded as still being one of the best attacking full backs in Europe and the Express – along with a number of nationals – have reported in the past 24 hours that Liverpool will go head to head with Manchester United and Chelsea for the player.

Dani Alves is free to agree a deal prior to the summer in January and unless his club offer him a late deal there will no doubt be a host of clubs lining up to take the Brazilian.

While Liverpool aren’t exactly light in that position, with Johnson, Flanagan and Manquillo, there is no doubting that Alves would offer the club much more top-level experience and class with a fast-paced, attacking style perfectly suited to the Premier League.

With every club honour imaginable to his names, and almost 600 career appearances, Alves would provide a huge boost to the backline and provided a suitable deal can be agreed, should be a signing many fans are happy with.

Do you feel Liverpool should go all out to sign an agreement with Alves in January or is he now past his best? Let us know in the comments section.

What a short term signing that would be. Two years of us paying ridiculous wages and then what? Looking for another player wanting one final huge pay off. We have enough at right back. Another unnecessary signing
