Following on from the last debacle involving Liverpool players returning from international duty injured, Brendan Rodgers has insisted that, should Daniel Sturridge take any part in Liverpool’s weekend game, he will not be available for England selection.
Despite not being fully ready, England manager Hodgson opted to throw Sturridge in to ‘test his resolve’ in the last round of internationals which resulted in Sturridge missing over a month of football for Liverpool.
And it seems that Brendan Rodgers has finally had enough of the England camps mishandling of his players, as he said last night “We are hoping he can develop over the next 24 hours and train with the team on Thursday and be available for some involvement and be in the squad on Saturday. But if you are talking about players availability they need to be fit to play and Daniel will not be fit to play.”
“My focus is on protecting the Liverpool players and at this moment in time my focus is on getting him fit for Liverpool.
“I have not spoken to Roy since then. We have good dialogue and he knows he can call and speak about any of the players. Hopefully, he will have found anything I have ever said helpful about the England players working with Liverpool.”
Having already stressed in the past that the manager of the international side has to be very careful how Sturridge is handled, fitness-wise, Rodgers is clearly keen for Sturridge’s focus to be on Liverpool and ensuring that his own side are able to get the best out of England’s top striker.
