Sterling has been at the centre of another Roy Hodgson blunder

A popular sub-plot in the media these past couple of months has been the battle between Brendan Rodgers and Roy Hodgson. When Sturridge came back from international duty with a thigh injury that ruled him out for the next 7 games, due to having his two day recovery time cut short, Brendan Rogers was furious with the England manager and responded so in his following press conference.

Hodgson pleaded his case and stated he hadn’t pushed Sturridge very hard, but ultimately backed down and agreed with Rodgers’ wishes for the striker not to be called up for the following international break. It seemed like Rodgers had won, but to think that would be to forget that Roy Hodgson has an incredible knack for making things difficult for himself and anyone connected with him. So when you consider that Raheem Sterling, regarded Liverpool’s best player in Sturridge’s absence, is also currently England’s most potent forward, things were always going to get worse before they got better.

Sterling only played 45 minutes against San Marino and came on as a sub for the last 35 minutes against Estonia last week, but it would seem that this was only because Hodgson felt that he had to placate Brendan Rodgers, who was understandably concerned for his star youngster. Because then the England manager proceeded to throw Sterling under the bus, revealing to the media that the 19-year-old had asked to be rested for Estonia because he was feeling tired. This opened the youngster up to a torrent of online abuse from moronic England fans who believed he was lazy. It was actually a very smart request from Sterling, not to mention unselfish; why play someone who’s not feeling 100% right now when you can play another player who could probably do a better job?

For Hodgson to then claim that Sterling has tiredness “ingrained into him” and to openly question Liverpool’s policy of giving players two day recoveries after matches puts him on yet another collision course with Brendan Rodgers, one that he would do well to avoid.

Nearly half of the England squad is comprised of Liverpool players. Along with Sturridge and Sterling, Hodgson has also called up Henderson, Lallana, Lambert and Glen Johnson. Though he’s currently injured, you would think that Jon Flanagan will also be pushing for a starting place in the next few years. Considering so much of Hodgson’s squad is made up of Liverpool players, to burn bridges with his former club will surely only further complicate matters for the national team.

Rodgers could become a major pain for England, much like Sir Alex Ferguson was in making sure his players picked up suspicious “injuries” right before a meaningless friendly or qualifier. It’s not a problem that Roy could navigate well, considering how many times he’s put his foot in his mouth at a time when expectations for the national team are at an all time low. It should be a cakewalk for him but he’s still managing to cause problems.

It would be wise if Hodgson played nice from here on out. Otherwise things could get worse before they get better.
