The young Sporting star could prove to be the answer to Liverpool’s defensive midfield woes

With the Reds again struggling to keep clean-sheets and all-too-often losing midfield battles, Brendan Rodgers is reportedly looking to bolster his midfield physicality by bringing in a tough-tackling, physically imposing midfielder and Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho is reportedly top of the list.

A long-time target for Arsenal and a host of other European heavyweights, Liverpool believe they could swoop in January and steal the player from under the noses of their league rivals and with his very role looking more and more available as the weeks go by, a guarantee of becoming a starter could prove to be a deal-closer for the Reds.

Having spent much of his early career on loan in Belgium, the midfielder returned to Sporting last season where he impressed in the defensive midfield role, from where he assisted his team in finishing as close runners-up to eventual champions, Benfica.

It has become a generally accepted fact that Steven Gerrard is not the right player to fill the position in Brendan Rodgers’ side and with Lucas Leiva seemingly out of favour there is a very big gap in the Reds midfield that has seen the team looking vunerable against all but the worst of sides over the past 12-18 months.

Would Carvalho be a good choice to fill the midfield void or should Liverpool be looking at more experienced targets?
