With little over 6 weeks remaining until the January transfer window opens, the speed at which transfer stories are hauled out, dusted down and given a new lick of paint will begin to increase exponentially right up to New Year’s Day and, in the case of LFC, that goes double, particularly after the club’s early-season struggles up to now.

It’s long been accepted that Liverpool have been interested in Marco Reus, Borussia Dortmund’s star man but now that Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea have taken an interest, that particular one may become somewhat difficult to pull off, particularly as Chelsea are currently running away with the Premier League and, more importantly, are also able to offer sack-loads of cash to any player they take an interest in.

Bearing that in mind, reports over the last 48 hours suggest that Liverpool will turn their attentions to the London sides own German winger, Andre Schurrle. The Germany international has been at the club since his £18 million move in June last year and, after having a relatively successful first season, appears to be out of favour with Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.

It was reported today that Chelsea would use Schurrle as a bargaining tool in their bid to take Reus from Dortmund and the winger would certainly be a like-for-like swap for their star man but if Liverpool submit a bid in the region of £20-25 million, it is believed that Chelsea may be willing to do business. The German has scored 11 goals in 54 games for Chelsea, along with a number of assists but his outstanding record for his country marks him out as a top quality player that would add to Liverpool’s attacking talent.

The only downside, of course, is that that would likely mean the Reds were accepting defeat in their efforts to sign Reus, having to submit to the buying power of more rich clubs such as Chelsea.

As we’ve seen in the past though, how willing Jose Mourinho will be to do business with a club he has butted heads with on a number of occasions in the past remains to be seen. How would you feel about the signing of Schurrle; would he be a suitable signing, or should Liverpool push hard to ensure Reus doesn’t slip through again?
