Can has big future at Liverpool, says Rodgers

Can has been impressive in many of his recent Reds displays

After coming off the bench at half time to play at centre back on Friday, Emre Can added to the calls for him to become a regular first-team starter for the Reds, following another impressive performance in a new position.

Speaking after the game at Burnley, Rodgers declared that the German has a huge future at Liverpool and his size, technical ability and physicality will all see him become a huge success at the club. He said “His favoured position is more of a defensive player, even though I’ve played him in an attacking role because I think that’s something he can do more of. But if you asked him his profile, he likes to be in that sitting role where he can play and dictate the game as well as be physical in the challenge and duels.

“I thought he came on and was outstanding. We needed to build the ball better, our possession wasn’t so good and we lost the ball too quickly, which didn’t give us a chance to get into good positions on the field in order to keep the ball.

“Him coming on gave us that assurance in possession and also physicality when we didn’t have the ball.

“He’s a player I know can play in a number of positions and play them well. He’s someone whose influence will become greater as the season goes on.”

With Liverpool facing 3 more games over the remainder of the festive period, Can is likely to see much more football and in Kolo Toure is injured for the visit of Swansea on Monday, may find himself deployed at centre back from the start.
