Liverpool are looking to throw more cash at the defensive woes that have plagued the team since last year

It’s just over 3 weeks until the January transfer window opens and ‘silly season’ as we’ve all come to fondly refer to it begins again in earnest for a month. With Liverpool having had such a terrible start to the season, the Reds will find themselves linked to all and sundry, meaning that even close rivals players won’t be safe from the rumours.

A number of today’s tabloids have reported that Liverpool are keen to take Tottenham’s star defender, Jan Vertonghen, off their hands in a further attempt to add to a defence that has struggled since Brendan took over but has been guilty of shipping daft goals all too regularly in the past 12 months.

The Belgian international has impressed at White Hart Lane since his move to Spurs but has been reportedly unhappy at the club for some time. Most surprising of all if that the player didn’t move in the summer but with January not long off, he will be linked with a number of top clubs and the Reds will no doubt be taking a close look at him.

Having spent many millions on the ailing back-line since last summer, Rodgers seems no closer to finding the solution to this Liverpool side’s defensive issues and, despite being a top player, the acquisition of the Spurs man is highly unlikely to solve a problem in which the issue runs much deeper than just changing the personnel.
