Brendan believes that Liverpool can make it through against Basel tomorrow night

Following on from two successive league victories, Brendan’s side was back to it’s old habits again on Saturday as the team struggled to a nil-nil draw against the far from terrifying opposition of Sunderland.

His captain, Steven Gerrard, was kept on the bench until past the mid-way point of the second half, with the potentially season-making 6th Champions League group game against FC Basel of Switzerland tomorrow night.

Speaking today, Rodgers said “This is a competition that has a great history here for Liverpool and the Olympiacos game was a part of it.

“It’s an opportunity for the players now to qualify and make sure they write themselves into folklore by winning the game and ensuring they get into the next round because that’s the objective.

“We’ve shown over the last few weeks that the group is starting to come together again after a disappointing spell. We certainly haven’t had the consistency this season. But slowly, game-by-game, I can see the differences in the team – the focus and the concentration.

“What we have in the squad is quality. We know it’s going to be a tough game for us, but certainly playing at home here will help. We’ve seen on many occasions what the crowd can do here for the team.”

On more than a few occasions on Saturday, the opposing section of Anfield could be clearly heard singing gleefully about the atmosphere at Anfield and if Liverpool are to put tomorrow night’s opposition to the sword the crows are going to have to roll back the years and treat the game in the same way as if it was 2004, or any one of the many knockout games against Chelsea over the years.

With Manchester United on the horizon, Liverpool need to continue their unbeaten run, and goals are needed to confirm progression – something which would not only see Liverpool with an interest in European football’s premier competition through to February next year but also give the team a much-needed shot in the arm ahead of a visit to the clubs’ most bitter of rivals on Sunday.

Can Liverpool win tomorrow, confirming progression, in what may become a turning point in an awful season so far?

im very proud of the lads, they gave everything. We controlled most of the games but couldn’t take our chances. A small lapse of concentration and unfortunately it cost us the game . We are disappointed to leave the competition at this stage but we will learn and grow from this as a team. (Don’t be surprised to hear this from clueless Brendan after the game)
