Carra doesn’t believe Can is a long-term option at centre back

Despite Liverpool’s improved form in the past month, which has happily coincided with much improved defensive displays, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has raised concerns over the defensive ability of Reds midfielder Emre Can who has so far impressed at central back.

Speaking on Sky Sports last night, the former Liverpool defender said “He played really well in the last five or six games bringing the ball out.

“But against top-class players he’s been found wanting. He got beaten too easily and tried to rectify it and made two mistakes.

“He found it really difficult and looked like a midfielder playing at the back. People say he’s been doing well recently in relation to bringing the ball out, but it was clumsy and a penalty, no doubt about it.”

Can has impressed many with how seamlessly he’s adapted to a position he isn’t completely used to and has shown a touch of class in possession but Carragher is clearly far from impressed.

Do you agree with Jamie’s assessment or is he being too critical of a younger player? Let us know your thoughts guys.

‘He played really well in the last five or six games bringing the ball out,’ Carragher told Sky Sports.

I have to disagree . Apart from the one mistake he was composed on the ball , made important interceptions and very good distribution . He is not a slow player as Jamie claimed, infact he is pretty quick. His body structure makes him look slow but that’s just deceiving. I don’t think Jamie is too fond of any defender who doesn’t kick the ball to row Z everytime

Like this! I still say Sami made Carragher look better than he actually was.

Just because Carra has an opinion you think he wasn’t a top player? You must’ve missed his 16 year career then, played LB, RB, and CB with guts and distinction.

I think tht emra can isn’t suitable for that position. I agreed to our forner legend’s oponion

  • Kess says:

Carragher is not telling the right thing here the guy is very good and more comfortable with the ball more than you in your playing days just shut up with your own goals.

can’s been a big part of our recent better form, hes still young, he made a mistake and gave away a penalty, just like every other centre back in the world has done at some point in their career. apart from that tackle he played well. sakho, skrtel, toure and lovren have all made mistakes aswell, but the first time can does he’s labeled as not suitable.

i love carra, but this is all a bit premature. give the kid a chance, he’s no worse at cb than any of our other options.

Emre has been really good since he’s been given the CB role. He’s assured on the ball and can drive the team forward from the back. Besides the penalty Eden Hazard was kept quite all game and there are not to many defenders who can claim to have achieved that. I take my hat off to Emre – keep up the good work!!!

Why is Can to blame for Hazard’s blatant dive?He went to ground before Can even touched him.Plus he;s still a kid and only just turned 21.I think Can will be class for us in a season or 2.Nicol slammed him too yesterday for the penalty.Ex reds need to cut him some slack.

Can has fully improved and does better to his role, we dnt follow the comment from jamie charagher because he normally discourages the players according to their ethnic groups. If can is to be an english play, he won’t say anything abt the can, so jamie is some contraversial and racist.

I’d have to agree with Carra he isn’t ideally suited to being a CB, but you have to give credit to how great this kid is; 1)as a cm/cdm he’s keeping 2 actual Cb’s kolo and lovren out at 21yrs (I think) 2) he’s only been in that position since the west brom game, again correct me if I’m wrong.

I hope this is a master plan from BR to improve his defensive qualities before moving him back to a more central defencive roll much like Lucas at the moment.

He will be immense in a few years can’t wait to see him grow into and for fill his full potential ????

Jamie just shut it, you ended up more Liverpool than most but u were born Everton, sometimes you sound like u want to go back Blue. Emre is special player, better you at your best! Sometimes I guess you just talk rubbish to stay relevant in your new job. Attention seeking moron

  • P'lero says:

Cara’s comments are not valid and correct. firstly its nt easy to b converted frm a DMF to a CB in a 343 formation. d lad is a bright prospect at 21. at least he hasnt scored an owngoal like our prominent CBs. hazard’s PK was simply a dive. d lad deserves some credit folks. YNWA
