One rumour that came out of left-field in the past 48 hours was that of former Rafa Benitez favourite, Alvaro Arbeloa, returning to Anfield from Real Madrid.

The Spanish full-back was one of the much more underrated signings of the Rafa Benitez era but the Reds have not been able to suitably fill the right-back position since he left and the defender’s stock has risen a great deal since his move to Real Madrid, with Arbeloa making over 200 appearances for the Spanish giants and gaining more than 50 caps for Spain in the process.

Arbeloa’s signing for Liverpool in January 2007 went largely under the radar but the defender went on to make 98 appearances for the club over the following 2 1/2 years, impressing with his solidity, reliability and consistency; something that the Reds have lacked for the best part of the past 5-6 years.

Since the start of last season, Arbeloa has found himself down the pecking order, making just 29 league appearances, with Dani Carvajal seemingly preferred by Carlo Ancelotti as Madrid’s first-choice right-back.

It is believed that both Arsenal and Chelsea are admirers of Arbeloa’s and have each made moves for the former Red but reports on Tuesday indicated that, should he look for a way out of Madrid in January, Arbeloa would favour a move back to Merseyside, in the knowledge that Glen Johnson won’t be around much longer.

Would you welcome Arbeloa back to Anfield? Let us know how you’d feel about the Spaniard’s return in our comments.

what is the point? play flanno and make him better. he’s the future. arbeloa is another stop gap that premier league clubs love. it’s full of stop gap players because nobody can be bothered developing their own talent anymore. lazy league full of lazy managers
