Aldo believes that Liverpool are seeing the best of Simon Mignolet again

While it’s been a long road to return to the sort of form that saw Liverpool pay a large chunk of money for him, Simon Mignolet finally looks to be reaching the sort of level that LFC fans have come to expect from the club’s number one goalkeeper.

In recent months Mignolet has come under a great deal of pressure from fans, press and former players, none more so than Bruce Grobbelaar who likened the Belgian to Dracula, in what amounted to nothing more than a poorly thought out dig at a player that was already massively lacking in confidence.

But, just when it seemed that Simon couldn’t get any worse, he actually started to get better and Liverpool now seem to have one of the most in-form and confident ‘keepers in the Premier League. On top of that, another Liverpool legend has spoken of his admiration for the player and declared him as Brendan Rodgers’ most consistent player.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Aldridge said: “He had some dark days earlier in the season, but Mignolet has been a shining light in the last month. In fact, I think he’s been Liverpool’s best, most consistent player since the turn of the year.

“He was excellent against Palace, and deserves huge credit for turning around his season so spectacularly. I’ve always been a fan of his, even when he was struggling. And it’s great to see him back to his best.”

While it is obviously a great boost for the player to receive such praise from such a well-respected former player, it will also serve to give the fans and manager confidence in the player who, until recently, had looked all but certain to be moving out of the club in the summer.

As things stand, Mignolet has now kept 5 clean sheets in his last 9 games and is one of the leading goalkeepers in the Premier League when it comes to clean sheets. Of course, that isn’t all down to the goalkeeper, but having a confident, aggressive and verbal ‘keeper behind your defence is usually the start of a great defence.
