Since joining Liverpool in the January transfer window of 2011, it’s fair to say that Luis Suarez has never done anything in a straightforward way. From the manner in which he first signed for the club, even to the prolonged saga that saw the striker move to Barcelona last summer.

But, yesterday, after having not returned to Anfield for a proper ‘farewell’ after the World Cup last year, the world class forward got a send off to remember in front of a packed out Anfield. Following the match, Suarez declared that, such are his feelings toward the Anfield faithful, Liverpool is the only club he’d move to should he ever return to the Premier League.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo after the match, Suarez said: “You never know in football what the future holds but if I ever play in England again I will play for the Liverpool team and not another team.

“It’s great to come back to Anfield. Not just for the old players coming back but those who play now and for the supporters, for Stevie and the foundation – it was a special game.

“I’ve missed the fans. The atmosphere is unbelievable, it’s amazing. Everyone who’s played for Liverpool knows how important the supporters are. They know they are in my heart.”

But while the Barca player failed to get on the scoresheet, he did caused Jamie Carragher 45 minutes worth of headaches, as he showed why he’d rated as one of the best players in world football.

Speaking of the chance to pair up with another former Liverpool star in the Gerrard team attack, Suarez said: “It was great for me to play up front alongside Fernando. Four years ago when I signed for Liverpool, I crossed my fingers to play with Fernando and he left three days after I signed.

“It was a great day for the other players but for me and Fernando it was a great chance to play together.

“Steven asked me (about taking the second penalty) because he’s a very nice person. It’s important when a player comes back after a few months to score a goal but for me it is not important because the day is for him.”
