The big match at Anfield today was a huge success, with stars like Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez once again gracing the Anfield turf

It was an emotional day for Liverpool fans, for Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, and for a number of former Reds stars that either didn’t get to say ‘goodbye’ or didn’t get the goodbye they’d have wanted prior to leaving. Not least of all for Fernando Torres.

For the Atletico Madrid striker, a return to Anfield must’ve have been a day of trepidation and concern as to the reception he would receive for the manner in which he ‘left Liverpool in the lurch’ a few years ago, to force through a move to Chelsea at the end of the transfer window.

However, any fears he may have had were unfounded, as he was greeted – mostly – as a loved, returning son by a crowd that cheered his every move and even gave a brief rendition of his famous song.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo following the match, a clearly emotional Torres said:

“It was just very emotional.

“I didn’t know how to react because I was not expecting them to sing the song which I still remember.

“I remember the great games we had here in the Champions league and trying to win the league and fighting for trophies.

“I have this song in my head and it was so important for me.

“Those three and a half years changed my entire life and I remember every important moment there was always that song from the Kop.

“So to hear that once again is something I will never forget.

“Everybody knows Liverpool fans are different class and for me today it is one of those things you can only dream about.

“It is just amazing to be able to be here and I just want to thank everybody for the welcome.”
