Allen saw the win against Swansea as a sign that Liverpool can rise to the challenge in the race for a top-4 slot

Another time, another day and this is a result that would’ve ended up much less flattering for Liverpool. There are few sides that could’ve matched Liverpool for guile or energy but, for 55 minutes at least, Swansea was one of those teams.

Of course, many will point to the fact that Swansea are a mid-table, average side but that would be missing the point of the fact that nobody is unbeatable, nor are they out-playable. Something Manchester United, City and Chelsea have all found themselves many times this season.

Luckily, Liverpool’s resolve is much greater now than at any time under Rodgers and after a rocky start, the team came through and showed great composure to see the match out, knowing that a far greater challenge may be ahead of them on Sunday. On paper, at least.

But many fan’s man of the match, Joe Allen, believes that Liverpool showed that they are capable rising to the challenge, even when up against team’s that can, on their day, take the game to the Reds.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Allen said: “We got three points, that’s the main thing.

“But we certainly did have to dig deep, especially in the first half – Swansea were the better side and made it really difficult for us.

“I think we can count ourselves maybe a little bit lucky not to have gone in behind. But thankfully we regrouped at half-time.

“It was important, with that performance, to get in at 0-0. We came out and gave a much better account of ourselves and got the three points.”

With Manchester United smashing Spurs at the weekend, Liverpool may have to show a much more impressive team display, as well as a great many individual displays, on Sunday because another three points will go a long way to securing a top-4 spot.
