Reports today have again claimed that Liverpool are believed to be interested in Benfica’s Argentine international, Eduardo Salvio. The 24 year old is having a great season with the Portuguese club, having contributed to 18 goals over the season, with 13 goals and 5 assists.
This is proving to be a very impressive season for the winger and many eyes will be on him in the summer. The Liverpool Echo though, even reported on Tuesday that sources in Portugal have tagged Salvio as one of Brendan Rodgers’ main summer targets.
With a release clause believed to be in the area of 60 million Euros, the Liverpool transfer committee, not to mention owners, are likely to balk at such a huge figure for a player that has had a solid career, to date, but has never really set the world alight.
However, these same sources in Portugal are also claiming that Salvio is looking to push through a new contract with Benfica, in order to lower his release clause and force through a move to Anfield.
But while Salvio is clearly a promising player, he also represents another player that has impressed in a weaker European league (or for a weaker team) but has yet to make any sort of real impression in European football. Something that Liverpool have been stung with over the last few transfer windows and will be looking to avoid in what will be a ‘make or break’ summer for the club and, more importantly, Brendan Rodgers.
Is Salvio the right sort of player Liverpool should be after, or is he another target of quite questionable quality? Let us know your thoughts on the Benfica winger below.
Right now I’d be interested in anybody who could score goals!
