Coutinho was the star against City on Sunday

It was an immense second half against Manchester City on Sunday, and many have since spoken of how impressive Brendan Rodgers’ side was. Following a fairly even first half, Rodgers’ team really kicked on after the break and City barely got a sniff, with Aguero the only player to really trouble Liverpool’s defence once or twice as the match drew to a close.

With Henderson scoring the opener and, it was again up to Coutinho to score the winner – as he did last season – and went on to confirm his status as the man of the match.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Brendan Rodgers said: “It was a brilliant result and an equally brilliant performance.

“I thought the players were relentless today in their work and their intensity and we had some great quality in our football. It was very, very pleasing.”

As the team continues it’s rise up the table, the displays of the likes of Skrtel, Can, Allen, Henderson and Coutinho will have been a massive bonus for Brendan Rodgers after a disappointing result in Europe in the week.

He continued: “How they performed was at a real top level. I’ve got nothing but admiration for them because their focus was good in the game. They worked the system very well. And as the game wore on, we created more chances. We restricted Manchester City to one shot on target.

“The momentum and the flow and rhythm were with us in the game. I felt in particular in the second half, we started brightly and played through the system well. The players are really making the system work for us with their quality and intelligence.

“When you add the intensity of our pressure, we didn’t really give them a moment to settle. You have to applaud my players for that because they were relentless in how they pressed the ball.

“To keep a team of that quality to one shot on target, in a game that they would really want to win as much as us, says everything about the spirit, character and quality of my team.”

With the visit to Anfield of Burnley on Wednesday night, there is a real opportunity for Liverpool to close the gap on the top three-four even further. Can the Reds finish the job and crash the top-four party before Manchester United visit Anfield at the end of March? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
