Could the on loan Utd striker be on his way to Liverpool in the summer?

One of the more persistent rumours since Sunday has been that the on-loan at Manchester United striker, Radamel Falcao, could be on his way to Liverpool.

The Reds were heavily linked to the Columbian last summer, with many believing he was on his way to Anfield before Man Utd stepped in an snapped the player up but ultimately the club weren’t able to match up to another super rich club in the transfer market.

The 29 year old though has hardly set the world alight since his move to the Manchester, managing just 4 goals across 23 games and seems almost certain to be happily shown the door in the summer.

However, there’s no doubting he still has class in front of goal with a pre-United record boasting 200 goals in slightly over 300 games. Those are the sort of numbers you associate with a poor player, particularly not one that’s played for Porto, Atletico and Monaco, where much of his time was scuppered by injury.

Although this is the sort of rumour that is usually created from thin air by the likes of the Metro and the Express, the fact that the Independent and one or two other reputable sources are reporting that Falcao’s agent has been in talks with Liverpool may suggest there’s a tiny bit of truth to this.

That’s not to say they’re not averse to running with a snippet and making a story out of it but with the BBC and even Manchester Evening News going along, it would appear that there is at least a snippet of truth in the claims that Falcao’s agent has approached Liverpool with a view to signing the player.

Would Liverpool want to, at present, though?

FSG have traditionally not been a fan of signing older players, with cheap buys/free transfers proving an exception such as Kolo Toure and Rickie Lambert. Falcao, it seems, would still come at a significant cost; around £25-30 million, apparently. Would the current owners really pay so much for a 29 year old? Highly unlikely.

When you consider there are younger, more in form options available such as Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain, you have to wonder whether Falcao’s agent approaching the club (if true) is an act of desperation.

Regardless of the truth, Falcao may have been a better option 12 months ago but currently looks a more expensive Balotelli waiting to happen.
