Higuain would be a top-class goal scorer that Liverpool are currently missing but if Champions League football is key, will no doubt miss out

With the Reds short of viable attacking options at present, it seems obvious that a couple of top quality strikers (or, at least one) will need to be acquired in the summer. What is not so obvious, is who that man should be.

But according to Football Italia Liverpool may have already targeted Napoli’s star man, Gonzalo Higuain, as their man to finally replace Luis Suarez’s goals in the summer.

The former Real Madrid man was highly linked with Liverpool last summer and during January, with his reported £30 million relsease clause believed to be a big attraction, given the relative quality of the player.

Football Italia report that Higuain would only seek a move if Champions League football wasn’t secured by Rafa Benitez’s current team.

However, another likely factor could be the departure of the Napoli manager himself in the summer who has been linked with a number of top sides, including a return to the Premier League.

Regardless of the situation come the end of the season in Serie A, the striker is likely to be demand over the summer, particularly after another high scoring season during which he has managed to put away 22 goals in 44 games.

Of course, talk of failure to attain Champions League football is well enough but if Liverpool too fail to secure top European football, which is highly likely, they may well lose out to another rival as they have with a number of players in recent seasons.
