After an all-round terrible defensive display against Arsenal at the weekend, Liverpool are still enduring the aftermath of a defeat that all but spelled the end to the club’s hopes of Champions League football next season.

Simon Mignolet, Liverpool’s no.1, believes the key to be better organization and learning from the mistakes made against Arsenal. Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, he said: “You always try to take the positives and negatives out of the game. I’m my own biggest critic and you analyse your games in a critical way together with the goalkeeping coach.

“You see afterwards what you could have done better. At certain moments, you have to make a save – in the first 10 minutes [against Arsenal] I tried to keep the clean sheet, but unfortunately it didn’t happen.

“Your own individual performance always comes second best and you don’t really want to think about that too much because it’s about winning games and making sure, together with the team, you’re getting the performance that you want.

“Afterwards, you’ll analyse your own game to see what was good and what can be done better. The goalkeeping coach, the gaffer and the fans asked me to be commanding and demanding.

“Before the game, Kolo reminded me that I had to keep him on his toes with it being his first game for a while. I’ve done that ever since I came back into the team, to be loud and help the team out, organising and helping them in a positive way.

“Organising the defence is something that is very important and I try to do my best every single day in training to make sure the lads get the information they need.”

Despite Mignolet’s best efforts, too many collective and individual errors saw the Reds pay in a costly way, conceding four goals whilst squandering a host of good chances at the opposite end.

With only the possibility of a Europa League spot now up for grabs Liverpool will have to get over that result quickly and knuckle down to the task at hand, if the season is to end in a marginally positive way.

Of course there is also the possibility of an FA Cup, with Blackburn awaiting the Reds in an FA Cup replay on Wednesday, which could almost certanly see a very disappointing season end on a high note, and Simon believes that Liverpool have to ensure they make it to Wembley on Wednesday.

He said: “It’s a massive game against Blackburn, we knew that beforehand. It’s not going to be easy and it’s going to be a totally different game to the one away at Arsenal.

“It will be tough, but we want to get through to the next round and put in a performance to make sure that we play in the semi-final at Wembley.”
