Lovren believes Liverpool’s confidence has returned after a sticky few weeks

After a rather comfortable (in the end!) win over Newcastle last night, Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren believes that the squad are regaining confidence ahead of the clubs’ most important match of the season so far on Sunday.

Liverpool beat Newcastle courtesy of goals from Raheem Sterling in the first half, and a rather rare Joe Allen effort in the second and Lovren believes the manner in which the Reds won – and the win itself – has generated a new confidence throughout the team.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Lovren said: “We had difficult moments in the last few games against the big teams.

“It didn’t go the way we wanted.

“But now, after the cup win and this game, the confidence is back. That is the most important thing. We just need to continue to be calm and do our job.

“We need to be calm this week, to prepare ourselves, because we know it will be a tough game against Aston Villa and we want to go to the final.”

With a trip to Wembley coming up this Sunday, Liverpool have at least the FA Cup still to play for which, itself, offers a spot in next season’s Europa League.

However, the win last night, not to mention results over the weekend, have again opened up the doorway to the possibility of finishing in fourth with Manchester City currently conspiring to implode as the season draws to a close.

But firstly, all eyes are now on the cup semi-final on Sunday and Lovren continued: “We knew that we’d have a difficult game and we knew that we needed to win if still want to be in the top four.

“We had a little bit of pressure because we are also waiting for the FA Cup semi-final, so it was a good win for our confidence. We just need to continue like this and I think we’ll be fine for the semi-final.”
