No even the most pessimistic of Liverpool fans would admit to having expected to lose 2-1 to Aston Villa in Liverpool’s most pivotal match in the clubs’ recent history.

Even fewer would admit to having expected Liverpool to have been utterly dominated for much of the game by a group of average players, managed by Tim Sherwood. This is perhaps the most worrying aspect of the defeat; Brendan Rodgers made many wrong decisions from the start, and throughout, and was generally out-thought by the Villa manager.

In truth, he didn’t have to think much, given the direness of much of what Liverpool offered, with both captain and his number two remaining largely anonymous in another huge game whilst, a few moments aside, Liverpool’s usual threats were pretty much nullified.

The cries of ‘Rodgers out!’ on social media appear to have gathered pace a little since the end of the match, and the team and manager will be under a great deal of scrutiny between now and the end of the season as they look to salvage something (anything!) from what has amounted to a familiar story of disappointment and let-downs for Liverpool fans, once again.

Onto the player ratings.
