Toure believes there are only two strong contenders for Liverpool’s player of the year

As another disappointing seasons draws to a close, you’d think that the club’s annual awards bash would be a pretty quiet affair, considering so many player have either drastically under-performed or spent far too long out with injury.

But when it comes to the club’s player of the year, Kolo Toure believes there are only two contenders: Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo ahead of the awards night a couple of weeks from now, he said:

“I have two players to be honest who I think will be challenging for it.

“They are Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson. They have both been really consistent and have played really well.

“Jordan has been really strong. He has scored some important goals and led the team really well when Steven Gerrard wasn’t in the team.

“Philippe has been great. Last season he was fantastic, but this season he has added more goals to his game.

“It’s a tough decision. Who is going to win? I have my choice but I’m going to keep that under my hat. I think it’s going to be between those two players.”

Both have been two of the more impressive players for Liverpool this season and, apart from Martin Skrtel, there are no other players that immediately spring to mind when the awards are given out.

Henderson, made vice captain this season, has scored 8 goals and contributed 13 assists. Whilst Coutinho has scored 8 and added 7 assists. In another season, this may be considered a fairly average return for two such highly-rated midfielders but represents personal bests for both players and makes them the standout shouts for player of the season, so Kolo may have a point.

What are your thoughts on player of the season – are Coutinho and Henderson the only viable options, or should the likes of Martin Skrtel (Liverpool’s only standout defender this season) and Raheem Sterling (13 goals, 9 assists) also be under consideration?
