The Italian legend has again been associated with a move to Anfield

As reported last week by live4liverpool, Juventus and AC Milan legend, Andrea Pirlo, looks almost certain to leave the club after the Champions League final this summer and once again, the Italian midfielder is believed to be on his way to Anfield.

Further reports from Tuttosport in the last 24 hours claim that Pirlo is free to move on from Juve and Liverpool have discussed a possible move for the player, as a possible replacement for the outgoing Steven Gerrard.

While Pirlo is a top-class midfielder (even now), it seems odd that the club would consider replacing a 34 year old that has spent his entire career in the fast-paced environment of the Premier League with a 36 year old who has never set foot outside of the Serie A. If the move was purely to add some experience to the squad, then the move may make sense, otherwise it seems to make little sense.

With regards the rumours of Jackson Martinez from O Jogo however, the Colombian would seems a much more likely fit, purely in terms of suiting the Reds’ playing style. The Porto striker is fast, strong and has great technique, with something very rare in the all but the best of modern day footballers in that he is comfortable with either foot.

Off the back of 32 goal season in Portugal, it’s unlikely that Martinez will remain at Porto, considering he turns 29 in October and probably has 3-4 years at the very top left in him. Sadly for Reds, it’s that very fact that may see Liverpool pass up the chance, considering his club will be looking for somewhere in the region of £25 million for a striker with little-to-no sell on value.

At present, either player seems an unlikely transfer so unless there is a drastic change the recruitment policy of FSG it may be just another case of looking on enviously as one of our rivals snaps them up.

Would – or should – Liverpool make moves for either player? Let us know your thoughts below.

If we get Pirlo in to replace our leaving captain, I will never watch another LFc game again. It’s an insult! And Mrtinez is going to Arsenal, he’s a club fan of them and has said their style suits his playing.

Pirlo is twice the player Gerrard is or ever has been. He should go to a top European side rather than a team that couldn’t even finish above Tottenham.

Liverpool are not worthy of Andrea Pirlo, he is a generation-defining player and Liverpool are a mediocre side. In all honesty I can’t imagine him leaving Juventus unless it was to a side with a shot at Champions League glory.
