Despite having been probably the most active Premier League side during the transfer window so far, there’s no doubt that the Reds current list of new signings has left fans feeling slightly underwhelmed.

The signings of Milner and Bogdan on free transfers, Danny Ings for a tribunal fee and Charlton starlet Joe Gomez for £3.5 million can hardly be described as righting the wrongs of last summer.

However, if you’re to believe the rumours today then that might all be about to change.

Reports in the morning papers and online publications claim that the Reds have submitted a bid, in excess of £15 million, for Real Madrid’s Spain international, Asier Illarramendi.

Considering the 25 year old has been linked with Liverpool since prior to his signing for Madrid, it would certainly be a long time coming but the midfielder would also represent the sort of player the club should be looking at.

The former Sociedad star moved to Real in 2013 but has struggled for regular first team football up against the likes of Modric and Isco, and Liverpool are hoping that Rafa Benitez is willing to do business with his old club (as, no doubt, many fan’s are too).

The Spanish star has always been highly thought of in Spain and Madrid fans are believed to rate him very highly but with Benitez wanting to stamp his own mark on the club, he’s likely to want to free up some funds (and places in his squad) and that may hand Liverpool the opportunity to sign a top young international.
