Skrtel has refused the club’s latest offer

As if the club wasn’t already in the media spotlight enough this summer, one of the team’s most experienced, long-serving stars has turned down a contract offer he deems ‘unacceptable’.

It was rumoured a couple of months ago that Skrtel was to be offered what basically amounts to a ‘pay as you play’ contract, which neither the player or the club spoke out about at the time. However, the big Slovakian did move to temper rumours that he was lining up a move to Wolfsburg.

But now, the Liverpool ECHO, along with a number of national publications, are reporting that Skrtel has spoken in the Slovakian press to confirm that the club’s latest offer is something he can’t accept.

As reported on the the Liverpool ECHO website, Skrtel is reported to have told Slovakian media: “It’s unacceptable for me.

“I think that contracts like this offered to players who are much older than me or the player who had some health problems.

“The contract which has been offered to me is unacceptable, so I did not sign it. I have one year left and there has been some speculation about the interest from other clubs. We will see what happens.”

The 30 year old was one of few Liverpool players to emerge from last season with any sort of credit, whilst he now remains one of the club’s longest serving players, with Lucas Leiva (another player who seems to be on his way this summer), but looks like he will either play down his contract or take the opportunity to move on, with German side Wolfsburg still interested, and now interest from Inter.

What’s happening at LFC at the moment, are the club wrong to refuse better contracts for older players that still have a lot to offer? Let us know your thoughts below.

Unbelievable! Is this “unacceptable” offer coming from the owners, Ayre or Rodgers? Wonder if we’ll ever find out who’s in charge of transfers, (in and out) contracts, scouting etc. If it’s Rodgers that’s worrying. If it’s not Rodgers it’s even more worrying as he is just accepting everything.
