With Liverpool’s most expensive deal of the summer (second most expensive in the club’s history) wrapped up, reports claim that the club will now turn its sites back toward Nathaniel Clyne.
Southampton right back Clyne, has been the target of much speculation since the end of the previous season, with Liverpool having already had one bid for the player turned down.
And now media reports, via the Liverpool ECHO claim that the club have returned to the South coast with a £12.5 million bid.
The player’s club are believed to be looking for closer to his asking price of £15 million but are confident some sort of deal for slightly less can be agreed.
Clyne comes off the back of perhaps his best season to date, playing 41 games for his club, as first choice right back, scoring three goals.
Liverpool are believed to see Clyne as an ideal replacement for Glen Johnson and, with Flanagan still a fitness worry and Javier Manquillo losing his place to a midfielder at the back end of last season, there’s no doubting that Xlyne would become the club’s first choice in that position as well.
The right back, at 24, is yet to reach his peak and, despite only leaving Championship football with Crystal Palace and his current club three years ago, already has five England caps to his name.
His club will no doubt be keen to ensure a deal is wrapped up quickly, as Clyne’s contract is due to expire in 12 months and he has expressed that he has no intention of signing a new contract.
