With previous summer target Carlos Bacca now destined for Milan, Liverpool will have no option but to turn their attentions to one of the club’s other striking targets.
As previously reported, Christian Benteke has long been considered the Reds’ primary target, in terms of a new striker, but claims in the press on Sunday and this morning suggest that Liverpool have also run the rule over Manchester United striker, Javier Hernandez.
Benteke was subject to a bid, reportedly of around £20 million, which Villa turned down, and the Reds aren’t keen on meeting his asking price. However, with Bacca’s move to Milan confirmed, the club will now turn its attention back to other targets, with United’s Hernandez a consideration.
The Mexican spent last season on loan at Real Madrid, scoring 9 goals, most of which came from the bench.
Like Benteke, Hernandez offers a great deal of Premier League experience, having played over 150 games for United, scoring 59 goals. Again, most of which have been from the bench. The player has a huge amount of international experience as well, with over 70 caps for Mexico, as well as a quite prolific 40 goals.
Like Benteke however, most Liverpool fans would not be too keen on Hernandez, despite his experience and would see signing a player surplus to requirements from bitter rivals as a step in the wrong direction.
It’s also highly unlikely United would be willing to do business with Liverpool, so this one can be filed under ‘very highly unlikely’.
Unlikely but that’s a pity. He’d be ideal while Sturridge is injured and would provide a high quality option thereafter.
