The Reds midfielder is relishing the chance to captain Liverpool

It’s all change at Anfield this summer, once again, with players leaving, new players coming to the club in large numbers and a changing of the guard, if you will, with the outgoing Steven Gerrard having been replaced as captain by Jordan Henderson.

It’ll be the first time in over a decade that Liverpool have had a new club captain and all eyes will be on Jordan to see how he takes to the role, after having had varying degrees of success when standing in for a club legend last season.

The player himself though, is relishing the challenge and spoke to LFCTV this week to discuss the challenges of captaining LFC and his hopes for the new season.

He said: “I think I’ve got a role to play in terms of helping them (young & new players), making them feel welcome in just a normal environment for them really.

“So in that sense it will be a little bit different for me really but I will just try to go about my business in the same way on the pitch and try and put in good performances for the team.

“It’s not things that I have to do but it’s things that I like to do, in terms of younger players coming in or new players coming into the club – I feel as though there’s a responsibility for me to make them feel as welcome as possible.

“Whether that will be off the field or on the pitch, training and in the games, I’m just trying to create a good atmosphere amongst the lads and I’ve got a big part to play in that.”

But, while Henderson is keen to respect Gerrard’s legacy and enjoyed his time playing alongside the former Liverpool captain, he doesn’t want to simple mimic Gerrard’s style.

He continued: “I’m still quite young so I’m just trying to find my own way of doing things.

“I don’t just want to do what Stevie did when he was here or any other captains I’ve worked under.

“I want to try and have my own sort of style and my own ideas for the team.

“There’s a couple of things I’ve tried to do but hopefully I’ll just grow into the role and as time goes on I’ll be more experienced and maybe do different things.

“But my main focus is obviously on the football side of the pitch and in the dressing room, making sure them things are right and the other things I can look to improve on.”
