Rodgers simply has to win something this season at Liverpool

Not that we’re usually keen on reporting on the words or thoughts of players or former players outside of the Liverpool bubble, but former England and Newcastle legend, Alan Shearer, spoke some true words yesterday when he declared that Brendan Rodgers really has to win something this season to back up his spending so far at Anfield.

Speaking in his Match of the Day preview, Shearer said: “Brendan’s spent a lot of money again.

“He has to achieve success this year, he has to win something.”

Having now spent North of £250 million since he joined Liverpool (albeit, factoring in ‘net spend’ makes that number far less impressive), Brendan Rodger has yet to even reach a final, achieving Champions League football just once, and Liverpool fans were clamoring for him to be sacked after an abysmal end to last season.

But, approaching his fourth season now, Rodgers is now entering a season with a squad that, one or two aside, he can’t say isn’t of his own choosing and with his own club captain now in place there will be only one casualty if the season doesn’t get off to a good start.

Regarding the change in personnel in the backroom, Shearer seems to believe there is something a bit fishy going on. He continued: “Also, with the change of his backroom staff, the way it happened… I’m not sure that you have a trusted lieutenant right throughout your career and then you come to the end of the season and because you’ve had a poor season say ‘we’re going in a different technical direction’.

“That doesn’t sit easy. Something smells a little bit there. Brendan will be under huge pressure.”

Is Rodgers under as much pressure as Shearer seems to think, or should he be given more time to prove himself? Let us know your thoughts below.
