Johnson doesn’t believe that Liverpool are any stronger than last season

Never one to endear himself to fans when he was actually at the club (at least in recent seasons), Glen Johnson appears to be getting started very early in his Stoke career in demolishing any good will he still had left in the bank with Reds fans.

With the club that hammered the final nail into Liverpool’s miserable season last year being the first game of the season for Liverpool, the opportunity is there for the club to put those bad memories to bed early on, and the words of Glen Johnson this evening will give the players – particularly the new signings – that extra incentive to set the record straight.

Speaking on the eve of the game, via the Liverpool Echo, Johnson said: “They’ve made some signings, but not ones that are going to walk straight into the team. They’ve lost Raheem (Sterling), who was an important player, so I wouldn’t say it’s a better squad than last year.

“It will be key for them to get off to a good start, but we want to be difficult to beat and try to improve on last season’s points tally. That was a record for the club, so if we beat that we will be happy.”

Johnson was a mixed bag at Anfield, signing for a then huge fee for a defender, he started well and gave Liverpool an extra attacking dimension from full back but, in recent years, he has looked like he was warming down for retirement; only showing flashes of the player that most people knew was in there.

Now at Stoke, Johnson will be hoping to prove the doubters wrong, despite saying he feels he has nothing to prove. And while it’d be typical Johnson to turn in the performance of his career, should he play tomorrow, Liverpool fans will be hoping to see another familiar performance from the defender that we’ve become used to in recent years.

Can Johnson cause Liverpool problems tomorrow and his he right about the Reds’ new signing? Let us know your thoughts below.

Hahaha we are much stronger because he left , just wish he took mignolet with him . Also we are not stronger with Milner instead of Allen ( thank god he is injured) and not stronger with Benteke instead of lambert ? Add firminho and are we not stronger ? Sour grapes from and old man with a lazy playing attitude cost us quite a few points last season and the one before, thank goodness you have left , see what your new fans think of you each time you lose the ball
