Rodgers believes that the work is almost done for his player’s pre-season

He’s hopefully not being too premature when he says it, but Brendan Rodgers believes Liverpool will be ready for their opening game of the season next weekend. A game, which, just so happens to be against the side that smashed 6 goals past Liverpool on the final day of last season.

Losing 6-1 to Stoke City will go down as the lowest point of last season, perhaps even the lowest point of Brendan Rodgers’ managerial career, it was certainly the lowest point of most Liverpool fan’s footballing lives since the darkest days of Roy Hodgson but the manager believes that Liverpool’s pre-season has prepared them well for the opening day.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Rodgers said: “We were better in the second half than the first. We tried to look at something in the first half.

“But our fluency was really good in the second half and obviously we scored a couple of really good goals. I’m pleased – another good workout for us in the last of our pre-season games abroad.

“In terms of everything that the players have been through – all the travel around the world – they are in good condition.

“We still have another week’s good work to do, but we’ll really focus in on that and come Stoke, we’ll be ready.”

The 2-nil win looked slightly laboured but the players grew into the game in the second half, putting some good moves together, and showing a real fluency that had been missing in the first. It is even more promising to consider that the likes of Christian Benteke, Roberto Firmino and Daniel Sturridge have all yet to get a run out and will add genuine attacking quality to the side.

Rodgers continued: “It was a good win; we could have had a few more goals but also, importantly, defensively we were strong – Simon [Mignolet] probably had only one save to make. Overall, it was a good night.

“They’re in the process of looking to qualify for the Champions League, they are the top club in Finland, they have got some good players and it was always going to be a good test for us.

“The pitch was beautiful so it was perfect for our game and our fast football. All round, it was a good night for us and we’ll take plenty of positives from the game.”
