Coutinho wasn’t at his best but saved the best for the winner today

It feels like it was only yesterday that our last Stoke City match report was published containing much negativity and without a single player coming back with any sort of credit.

But, if today’s game showed anything else, it was that this new-look Liverpool side may have a new-found steel and grit about them that we’ve missed (more-or-less) since Brendan Rodgers took charge of the club.

The performance overall wasn’t quite up to scratch, that much is true. Defensively, things were a bit ropey in the first 25 minutes but between them Skrtel and Lovren became much more solid as the game wore on and were two of the standout performers.

Things will improve though and, at this stage, 3 points are 3 points; we have to be happy with overturning the same result from last year. A few players need to up their game against Bournemouth on Monday 17th August, however.

Benteke is a share waste of money. Mario Balotelli would have handled the pressure better. Roger began with a terrible system. Emre Can and Coutinho saved the day. Fimminho not given time to shine. Lovren was much better today. Hope he keeps it up.Cline and Gomez were wonderful. Same as Ibe

I think Ibe was so rusty on the day, together with Lalanna.when Can was introduced in the game (midfield), the game automatically changed. In our next game let Rogers start with 3 midfielders in the middle of the park with Can included and also Firmiho should join up in the attack. Forever a Red.

Yes Benteke almost won all his headers, but he doesnt have the pace to freely latch onto through balls. One notable big plus is that he gives Mignolet an outlet to hoof the ball up which cuts out his wayward passing. Firminho should definately start when fit and Can too. Milner was solid but also lacks quality balls forward. We look set up to play a different more cautious game this season which seems a sensible tactic for now
