The midfielder has shown time and again how much he’s still needed at the club

He may well have been on the verge of leaving before the transfer window closed but Lucas returned against Arsenal last month to show his importance to the side and Brendan Rodgers clearly opted to pull the midfielder out of his move.

The Brazilian has shown time and again that Liverpool still need him and the move to Besiktas seemed a strange one, considering the lack of movement for a replacement but that’s never stopped Liverpool before so it should be considered a minor miracle that Lucas was given a chance against Arsenal and took it.

Obviously, Liverpool were absolutely dire defensively against West Ham, but that was mostly down to typical defensive errors and a complete lack of team effort, despite Lucas’ presence. Having him available will be a huge plus for the Reds up until January and Lucas is hoping to make a real impact.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, he said: “It’s been very intense [the window], to be honest.

“I think the last couple of years, every transfer window my name is [linked with a move].

“Of course there are times when you think you might have to move on and I was very close to moving but one thing I will always have is commitment to this club.

“I’ve been here so long and I always said if I had the choice to be here and be happy, I would always choose Liverpool.”

That sort of loyalty is always welcome in this day and age and it’s simply a bonus that the midfielder adds a dimension to the Liverpool midfield that none of the other options do, at present.

He continued: “When your future is in doubt, you might have to think of another solution, but I’m happy that it didn’t happen and I’m here to fight for the club as I have been doing for eight years.

“I’m just looking forward to a good season and putting Liverpool back where it belongs. I have this chance to say I’m fully committed.

“I’ve been here so long and I really love this club, I just need to now focus on my performance and help in the way the manager and the staff asked me to help.

“Hopefully, I’ll be an important player for the club this season.”

If all the players have the same class and attitude as Lucas then things may turn out slightly differently. We can only hope the team is back on form on Saturday and if Lucas starts, then we can at least be assured that things should be more stable at the back.

Liverpools back four and even Lucas was bad against West ham.they wer to many defensive errors in one game they just not focus enough. I don’t know if u can blame the defence cause the ball is lost in midfield so often that is y other teams are counter attacking liverpools in waves. They need to retain the ball more forget about that “im gonna win ugly”stuff. Maybe they should try Gomez as a defensive midfielder he can intercept the ball better.I can’t for one second think that Rodgers was a defender in his soccer career cause he’s there 3 years but is defence is just as bad now then 3 years ago
