What a whirlwind 24 hours for Mamadou Sakho. Marginalised for the first month of the season, without an appearance to his name before captaining the side in the clubs’ first Europa League match of the season.

And now the talented French centre back has signed a new long-term deal at Anfield.

Having signed for the club in 2013, Sakho has gone on to make just 47 appearances, scoring one goal over two and a bit seasons. Sakho’s lack of a permanent starting berth in the side is due largely to injuries and the team’s well-documented defensive woes but after impressing on Thursday night (even winning Man of the Match from us), Sakho looks like he may have turned a corner at the club with this new deal.

The 26-time France international spoke to Liverpoolfc.co after signing this evening. He said: “I am very happy to sign a long-term contract with Liverpool because, as I’ve always said, I am very happy here and my family are happy in Liverpool.

“I will keep working because I am a Liverpool soldier and when Liverpool need me, I try to give my best. I am happy to stay as a Scouser!

“I work all the time 100 per cent, I try to stay professional and I give my best for this city and this club.

“It is important for me because every day when I wake up, I am very happy to come into the training ground with all the players.”

The 25 year old is a popular figure amongst Liverpool fans, with many feeling that he hasn’t been given a fair chance by Brendan Rodgers but following Thursday night, and being signed on long-term, he may well find his opportunity to win a place back in the side has just re-opened to him.
