Aldridge has expressed his shock at Brendan Rodgers’ sacking tonight

Shortly following the decision by FSG to relieve Brendan Rodgers of his job as Liverpool manager, former Reds striker John Aldridge expressed his shock at the decision.

While many were indeed shocked, most felt that the time had come, with some questioning why the decision wasn’t made at the end of last season. But now that the club have moved to part ways with Rodgers, Aldridge believes they must already have a man in place.

Speaking following the news tonight, Aldridge said: “Fans demand instant success these days. For a club as huge as Liverpool globally – and it’s massive – when things go wrong there’s a lot of pressure put on the owners. It’s a pity because in the glory days we never really saw managers come and go. Unfortunately in the last 10 years or so it’s happening far too much.

“But with the size of the club we need to be up there, we need to be challenging. Not just to get in the top four, challenging for trophies, Premierships and European Cups. We had a little bit of a stint in the European Champions league but it didn’t last very long, that should be happening year in year out and we look a long way off.”

As Aldo points out, minimum targets of challenging for honours and competing regularly in the Champions League simply weren’t being met and Liverpool haven’t looked like challenging since finishing second to Mancheter City 18 months ago.

The former Liverpool striker went on: “I actually think before you sack a manger, you have to have someone in place. I presume the owners must have done that and have been talking to a person if things went wrong.

“I think it could be Klopp, it could be Ancelotti. De Boer’s in the papers today. I think they would be the favourites.”

With former Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp top of many fan’s list of potential new managers, and the bookies’ favourite, it would seem a good shout that we could be being led out by Klopp in two weeks time.
