The £30 million man notched his third goal of the season yesterday

It was a triumphant return to the side for Christian Benteke, with a superb headed goal to put the home side a goal up against Southampton but the familiar frustrations remained as the Reds conceded a late equaliser to throw away three points.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp saw further positives but still believes there is much to do, with Liverpool looking under pressure after going a goal up, despite largely dominating the second half.

And goalscorer Benteke believes that the team must learn how to finish teams off after going ahead.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the match, he said: “We are frustrated today because, with what we showed, we deserved the three points.

“[One goal] is never enough, you have to play until the whistle. We just let them get one chance and they scored.

“We showed some good things and now we just need to kill the game when we can.

“We are not far but I think it’s time to take more points.”

Benteke himself gave the Reds a much more effective front man, providing the away side with problems that his younger counterpart, Divock Origi, just hadn’t managed.

His goal was a reminder that Daniel Sturridge isn’t the only top class Premier League striker at the club, with his excellent headed goal a reminder of his abilities.

He continued: “As a striker it’s important to score and every time I’m on the pitch I try to score and help the team.”

If the club can keep Benteke fit until Sturridge’s return, the team will be in a much healthier position for when the time comes to unleash both strikers on the Premier League.
