Whether it’s an attempt to try and deflect some of the attention from his own position, or he genuinely feels for his former coach, Jose Mourinho has come out with a staunch defense of Brendan Rodgers.

More than a fortnight since the former Liverpool manager was sacked by the club, Mourinho has spoken of his disappointment of Rodgers’ sacking, claiming that the situation with managers in football is getting worse.

Speaking about Rodgers (via the Liverpool Echo), Mourinho said: “You know, I feel sorry that somebody lost his job.

“And it is quite sad that football in this moment – even in this country – is happy with it.”Mourinho unhappy that Liverpool sacked Rodgers

It may be a position that is difficult for manager’s to understand, but while a minority may have expressed happiness at Rodgers sacking, most fans were disappointed that things didn’t work out but were sure it was time to make a change.

However, the Chelsea manager believes that there should never be excitement after a manager has been sacked and questions why the players didn’t apply themselves under Rodgers the way the did under Klopp in his first game in charge. He continued: “I’m not speaking about Jurgen [Klopp], I’ve a good relationship with him and nothing will change that. I’m speaking about the circumstances that made Brendan [Rodgers] lose his job.

“I don’t like people being excited that a new manager is coming. I don’t like a player to say: ‘Now, we are going to give extra to prove to the new manager.’ Give to Brendan! Not to the new manager.

“I don’t like this at all. It’s part of my world I don’t like. My world is changing so much. It’s getting worse.”
