It’s a clear work in progress. Can we just get that out of the way, right?
It was a familiar story, as under Rodgers, at Anfield this evening with players chasing, working hard and trying to break down a well-drilled and hardy away side.
Rubin Kazan hadn’t come to just sit back and, after actually taking the lead, looked ready for a ‘smash and grab’ until that fateful sending off. It was an idiotic decision by the Kazan full back and the fact that he saw his side immediately punished will have compounded his red card woes.
But as is often the case with sides reduced to ten-men, the away side became more compact, played with one striker and worked their socks off to stay in the game.
The Reds struggled away for the next hour, creating chances but not anything clear cut, despite the player’s best efforts. The important thing to note though, was that the man on the touchline seemed to be in control of every moment.
It’ll take time though. Time to undo the work of the previous regime that he doesn’t want in place. Time to change player’s mindsets and get them on to his own wave-length. And time to turn the rut around and get the Reds moving in the right direction once again.
But tonight was one more, tentative step in the right direction.
