The Empoli attacking midfielder could end up at either Merseyside team

It’s been some time since Liverpool and Everton were reportedly in for the same player but, today, there are reports that the two could be after the same player for the second time in a week.

Where last week there were reports of the Blues looking to steal a march on the Reds to sign Christian Tello, this week the pair of supposedly looking to take Riccardo Saponara of Empoli out from under one another’s noses.

The Empoli attacking midfielder has only been at the club since returning from AC Milan (where he’d previously moved from Empoli) in the summer, after impressing back on loan last season, but has impressed so much since his return that he has caught the attentions of a number of top European clubs.

The 23 year old has scored 11 goals and added another 7 assists in his last 26 games for Empoli in Serie A, meaning the club are keen to hang on to one of their star players, particularly with the club currently sitting in the bottom half of the table.

It is, however, no doubt that very reason that the two Merseyside clubs feel they stand a decent chance of pushing a deal through for the player but may have to wait until the summer to get their man.
