Where the win away to Chelsea was against opposition in turmoil, enduring a stunningly awful start to the season (although nothing should be taken away from that win), the win this evening away at the Etihad was a true marker of how far Liverpool have already come in such a short time under Klopp.
The players, to a man, were excellent this evening, bossing a strong Manchester City side for much of the match, even in the absence of both Daniel Sturridge and Christian Benteke. Both of whom started the game from the bench as Klopp opted to again start with Roberto Firmino playing as a ‘false 9’.
The Reds took the game by the scruff of the neck early on and barely let their grip slip throughout, with a high-pressing, fast paced game that City just couldn’t cope with. The City goal was the only downside, but we won’t let it affect any of our player ratings, as it was more of a team brain fart than anything, with no particular player taking sole blame.
The opposition will, of course, point to the absence of both David Silva and Vincent Kompany, but Liverpool can also point to a fairly extensive injury list that includes Mamadou Sakho, along with Daniel Sturridge who was on the bench today.
But for Liverpool fans, excuses will count for little. The team were excellent today and we may have just seen the first major step taken in Klopp reviving one of Europe’s sleeping giants.
