We may have forgotten it ourselves in recent years, and Sunday saw a brief reminder of just what this football club can be, but Liverpool’s round of 32 opponents in the Europa League – FC Augsburg – believe that Liverpool is a very special club.

And on hearing the news that his team had been drawn against Liverpool in the first knockout stage of the Europa League, Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl spoke of the delight of all those associated with the Bundesliga side.

Speaking during his press conference (via the Daily Mail), the German manager said: “The anticipation of facing Liverpool is huge. Everyone was happy.

“Liverpool are a cult and Jurgen is a huge name in Germany so I’m happy for the whole club.

“We will do everything in that we can. This game is something special.

Other than a brief few years under Rafa Benitez, Liverpool have been a shadow of their former selves and have been far from the ‘cult’ that the Augsburg manager describes the club as, but if anybody can return Liverpool back to the promised land then it is surely Jurgen Klopp.

He continued: “We will do everything in that we can. This game is something special.

“We will be underdogs against Liverpool but this is a role we like to assume.

“We have courage and confidence. Jurgen Klopp knows us and will not underestimate us.”
