It’s been a long-running thing, Liverpool’s reported pursuit of former midfielder Xabi Alonso and, according to reports, it will go on a while yet with Real Madrid now reportedly in the chase to take him back to the Bernabeu.
The 34 year old has been at Bayern Munich since Pep Guardiola took him to the German side in 2014 but with his contract due to expire next summer, and no talks of a renewal having begun, Alonso looks likely to be on his way at the end of the season.
Liverpool have long wanted to take the classy Spaniard back to Anfield, with Kenny Dalglish, Brendan Rodgers and now, seemingly, Jurgen Klopp has added his name to that list with the Reds intent on bringing Alonso home.
But Madrid could yet put a spanner in the works, according to Spanish website Vozpopuli who claim that his other former club want him back. With Rafa Benitez’s future (ridiculously) being in doubt at present though, it’s unlikely that Alonso would be willing to return to a former club in turmoil.
On the other hand, returning to Anfield, with the club on the rise under one of Europe’s top coaches, could be a real opportunity for the legendary Spanish midfielder.
Could Alonso still do a job for the Reds, and would you welcome his return? Let us know your thoughts below.

Xabi Alonso, despite his age, would be a real asset for Liverpool. He would give the midfield stability and be a role model for many of our younger players.
