Just over 24 hours to go before the January transfer window opens and the possibility of new signings becomes a reality. For Liverpool that’s likely to bring daily news of potential new defensive and goalkeeping targets.
According to reports today, Liverpool will be in the market for a couple of talented young defenders over the next few weeks, with Leicester and Inter Milan players top of that list.
Firstly, the Metro (we’re sorry) are claiming (citing Fichajes as their source) that Liverpool are keen to take Inter Milan’s Columbian centre back, Jeison Murillo in January.
Apparently, Inter won’t be too keen to sell but if Liverpool can come up with the reported £22-24 million, then they could get their man. Considering how many times Liverpool have spent upwards of £12-20 million on defenders in recent transfer windows, it’s hard to see FSG sanctioning another huge move so soon into Klopp’s reign.
Murillo would no doubt provide an upgrade on some of the current defenders in the squad, having been a part of one of the strongest defences in Europe this season. However, having only been in Italy since the start of the season, it’s highly unlikely he would want to move or that Inter would want to sell.
Elsewhere, there is the slightly more believable news that Liverpool are currently tracking Leicester’s great young hope Ben Chilwell. The 20 year old has played just once for the first team, in the Capital One Cup in October but Liverpool are apparently keen on signing the highly-rated young left-back.
The Telegraph claim that Jurgen Klopp has been advised that Chilwell would be ready to go straight into the first team, after being promoted to the senior squad at Leicester since Claudio Ranieri took charge and Klopp could sanction a bid of £4 million come January.
