Could Liverpool be about to sign Shakhtar Donetsk’s midfield star?

If you’ve ever wondered how to pronounce our current young midfielder, João Teixeira’s, surname you might want to make a more concerted effort to find out as reports in the past couple of hours claim that Liverpool have bid £24.5 million for his namesake, Shakhtar Donetsk’s Alex Teixeira.

The 26 year old has been in fine form this season, having scored a highly impressive 22 goals in just 15 League games, scoring 26 goals in 25 games overall.

The Brazilian star is generally considered an attacking midfielder but, like one of Liverpool’s current Brazilians he can operate as a forward. What will be important for Klopp though, is that the player scores plenty of goals. Something the team are sorely lacking in the absence of the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi.

Teixeira has been a target for rivals Chelsea (and a number of Europe’s top teams) and the reports coming from the Liverpool Echo are that Ian Ayre has flown to the club’s training camp in Florida in a bid to secure the player’s services ahead of Chelsea.

The club are apparently wanting more than the Reds have offered initially but Liverpool believe a deal can be agreed.

Like many of Europe’s Brazilian talents, Teixeira has yet to be capped by Brazil but he certainly has pedigree, with 89 goals in 222 games since 2009 for Shakhtar, as well as five League titles and a few cups thrown in.

With a host of his compatriots already at the club, Liverpool will no doubt be hoping to sway the player and get him to join Klopp’s Anfield revolution.

Keep an eye out for further reports today, as the story progresses.
