Here’s one for you, from that ever-reliable source in Italy, Calciomercato: Liverpool are apparently ‘leading the race’ for Juventus’ Spanish striker Alvaro Morata.

Since Juventus signed Paulo Dybala in the summer and the Spaniard has struggled to reach the heights of last season. Although it hasn’t helped that he’s scored less than half the goals Dybala has this season.

He scored just 15 goals in 46 games last season and has 7 in 29 this year, so taking into consideration that Dybala has scored 15 already this season, you have to wonder whether Morata has simply lost his place to a better player.

Either way, Liverpool are believed to be at the head of a queue that includes Spurs and Chelsea, and it’s likely that the fee would be north of £25 million, with reports late last year suggesting Juve would be looking for something over £40 million.

At the moment, Liverpool are in desperate need of a reliable goalscorer, whether up front or from midfield. And if Morata is struggling at Juve and wants a move, Liverpool are sure to take notice. Quite whether the club would be prepared to pay so much for a player with just 22 goals in over 70 games is open to debate.

Despite us apparently being at the front of the queue for the former Real Madrid man, the window is due to close in barely 48 hours and the rumour mill is only going to get more ridiculous so don’t hold your breath until (or unless) you see a player leaning against something, holding an LFC scarf.

The chances of Morata leaving Juve to play at Liverpool are roughly equivalent to me becoming the next Pope. I’m not a Catholic, by the way.
