Jurgen has vowed to deliver Ronnie a birthday gift

With Liverpool taking on Manchester City on Sunday in the Capital One Cup final, there’ll be many Reds who’ll believe that the team (and fans) are finally owed a bit of luck on the big stage.

But there’ll be none deserving of some joy from Liverpool success than Reds legend Ronnie Moran, who celebrates his 82nd birthday on the day of the final.

And Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp met Ronnie on Monday, as the former player and coach was invited to attend training at Melwood, and vowed to deliver him a birthday gift with a win over Man City.

Ronnie was accompanied to Melwood by his son, Paul, who told the Liverpool Echo: “Everyone looked after us brilliantly and it meant a lot to my dad.

“We sat on the balcony upstairs and watched training.

“Jurgen came in and spoke to my dad for a few minutes. He knew who he was. Jurgen said: ‘hello, Ronnie’ and told him he was a legend.

“When I said to Jurgen it was my dad’s birthday on Sunday, he said Liverpool would try to win the cup for him. He was very friendly and respectful.

“A few of the players came in. Jon Flanagan recognised my dad and came across to have a chat. My dad was made up.

“My dad used to go to Melwood regularly after he left the club to do laps around the training pitch for fitness. He can’t do that any more at his age but it was great for him to go back there again.”

Moran spent 49 years of his life at Anfield, in various capacities, from player and captain, to coach and a couple of cracks at being caretaker manager of the club.

And Paul says his dad will make sure he’s in front of the TV for the game. He continued: “We’re going out early for a family meal on Sunday and then back home to watch the match.

“All the family are coming around for it. Hopefully Jurgen gets his hands on that trophy.”
