The Norway international could be the next free transfer to Anfield

No, not that one unfortunately (not yet, at least), Liverpool would seem to be in the market for any decent looking free transfers this summer, as the club are apparently after Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Norwegian midfielder Havard Nordtveit.

The 25 year old is, quite like Joel Matip, due to be out of contract in the summer and Liverpool, along with a handful of fellow Premier League clubs, are supposedly keen to take him on a free.

The news was initially reported yesterday afternoon, but the Liverpool Echo have followed up today with some quotes from the player himself, where he claims there is nothing new to say about his future with just a few months of the season remaining.

He said: “I really meant (my future will be sorted in) weeks, not a week. Now my adviser is already currently on holiday, then we’ll see. There is no new update.”

While there isn’t a great deal in there to suggest he’s thinking of moving, the fact he’s very calm about the situation and his advisor is away on holiday would suggest the player is either in no rush to sign a new contract or is hedging his bets waiting for others clubs to swoop in.

The 24 times capped Norway international spent the early part of his career at Arsenal before eventually moving on to Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2010, where he has since gone on to play an impressive 223 games.

Nordtveit has played alongside Granit Xhaka for the past four seasons and, if rumours are to be believed, Liverpool are in talks with Xhaka and his representatives as well. A potential new partnership in the Reds midfield? We’ll have to wait until the summer to find that out. But for now, the free transfer of the Norwegian international looks like it could come together.
